What is Cylinder Oil

What is Cylinder Oil

Cylinder oil is a heavy-duty mineral lubricating oil. This oil is used for steam engines or marine engines. Cylinder oil protects the marine engine from corrosion and cleans the combustion chamber and components. On the contrary, this type of oil is also designed for lubricant piston rings to reduce friction between the liners and rings and also provide a robust seal between these two elements.

Overall, oil is a good solution for marine engines and makes the engine long-lasting. Specially designed lubricating oil for large two-stroke marine diesel engines is called cylinder oil. It is used in ships. It also lubricates cylinder liners and pistons but is very effective in acid neutralization, which is formed during combustion, especially when the engine is operated on high-sulphur fuels.

Cylinder oil applications
Cylinder oils are used for:

An amber-colored oil meant for use in high-pressure cylinder lubricators on two-stroke exhaust scavenging marine engines. Its primary purpose is to lubricate the surfaces between piston and cylinder that turn in friction, providing smooth action for the engine.
Cylinder lubricants can also protect the steel from corrosion.
Cylinder lubricant oil reduces metal-on-metal contact and wear; the film of oil reduces heat generation and acts as a barrier to corrosion of the metal parts. However, steam engines do benefit particularly from high-grade cylinder oils because they usually have a high viscosity index, a very important property for gaining thermal stability.

Properties Cylinder Lubricating  Oil

Cylinder lubricating oil has so many properties which make this oil strong and effective for the marine engine. But what are the actual properties of Cylinder lubricating oil?

High Quality Base Stocks

Cylinder Oils’ unique formulation includes high quality base stocks that give your machines/equipment stronger resistance to oxidation, thermal degradation, and the build-up of harmful deposits caused by the high operating temperatures in steam cylinders.

Provide Effective Protection

They combine anti-wear and low-friction properties to provide effective protection against rust and corrosion, good film strength, excellent lubricity, and greater resistance to water washout.
